High above the bustle of Queen Street, Zekkai feels like a secret escape — a sleek penthouse restaurant that brings together refined Japanese dining, panoramic city views and the energy of a Melbourne night out. Perched on the 15th floor, this new addition to the CBD’s dining scene is where sophistication meets atmosphere, where the clinking of glasses mingles with the soft hum of the city below.
We were invited to a Chef’s Table experience to explore the restaurant’s new menu — a journey that proved every bit as elegant and immersive as the view.
Stepping into Zekkai, you’re immediately greeted by floor-to-ceiling windows framing Melbourne’s skyline in golden light. The fit-out is sleek and contemporary, yet warm — polished marble, rich timber, and a subtle nod to the venue’s former life as Blue Diamond, with the original grand piano still taking pride of place beside the new DJ booth. It’s a space that transitions effortlessly from refined dining to late-night glamour.
Taking a drink from the bar before dinner, the staff our charming and engaging, balancing professionalism with warmth. Once seated, our host guided us through each dish with insight and enthusiasm — knowledgeable, attentive, and clearly proud of what Zekkai represents. Their passion elevated the experience, creating an atmosphere that felt more like a culinary performance than a meal.
Executive Chef Lam Kai Fung, formerly of Nobu, leads the kitchen — and his influence is unmistakable. Each dish reflects a blend of precision and creativity, offering a modern interpretation of Japanese fine dining that still feels approachable. It’s luxury without intimidation — a touch of luxe in the sky.
We began with Edamame, a simple but perfect opening act. Next, the Oyster Shooter delivered a bold interplay of brine, spice and freshness — a single mouthful that set the tone for the chef’s ability to balance flavour with flair.
The Chicken Karaage with Caviar followed — a playful twist on a familiar favourite. Crispy, juicy chicken topped with glistening pearls of caviar.
The Zekkai Signature Platter showcased the restaurant’s artistry — accompanied by delicate spicy tuna toast with just the right amount of heat, layered beautifully atop crisp bread. Each element was considered, textural, and bursting with freshness.
A delicate Miso Soup acted as a palate cleanser before the Crayfish with Miso Butter arrived. Rich, buttery, and decadent, the crayfish was tender and full of flavour.
Finally, the Stone Axe Wagyu M6/8 — melt-in-your-mouth perfection. The marbling, the sear, the balance of seasoning — everything about this dish embodied the precision and craft that defines Zekkai. A must for any visit!
Dining at Zekkai feels like a moment suspended above the city — intimate yet vibrant, elegant yet full of life. With its panoramic views, elevated menu, and an atmosphere that effortlessly bridges fine dining and nightlife, it’s a place where every detail has been carefully designed to impress.
Whether you’re there for dinner, a sunset cocktail, or a full evening under the city lights, Zekkai offers something truly special — a taste of luxury that feels distinctly Melbourne.
Set amongst the skyline, Zekkai is a must when next visiting the city — refined, approachable, and unforgettable.
