A new chicken spot has hit streets, heading to Keysborough to get on our hands on a fried chicken meal that made for one but built for two and we left with the takeaway box to prove it. Gimme Dat Chicken located at Shop 3, 220 Chapel Road, sits in the kind of strip where the neighbours are a nail bar and a phone repair place, not where you’d expect to find Korean-style fried chicken and popping-pearl drinks but that’s exactly what’s there.
In our opinion start with the Cainz Meal, because it decides whether you’re coming back – Six fried tenders, a full serve of regular chips, two pieces of buttered toast, and a tub of house Cainz sauce big enough to double-dip through the whole thing. It’s not built for one person — it’s built for two people who are about to argue over the last tender. This is the standard order now. Every visit, non-negotiable.
From there the menu splits into its two real strengths, the sauce work and the bao. The boneless chicken comes in a range of sauce options but we opted for the Korean Sweet ‘n’ Spicy — next came the spice level, spicy-hot is that perfect middle ground that just hits the spot not to hot but not to bland either. The heat arrives after the sweetness, not instead of it, and the coating holds its crunch under the glaze instead of turning to paste. If this is the dish to judge the kitchen by… it passes.
That same sauce shows up again in the bao, and it’s the difference between the two options on the menu. The Gimme Dat Classic (cucumber, sweet pickle, jalapeño mayo) is clean and a little safe. The Sauced Up Slaw — house slaw, sweet pickle, chicken coated in that sweet-and-spicy sauce — has the kick the Classic doesn’t. Get both if you’re deciding between them. But if you’re only getting one, it’s the Sauced Up Slaw.
The mozzarella sticks pull a proper cheese stretch — long, unbroken, the kind you want a video of to post about it. No dedicated dipping sauce comes with them, but that’s not a problem here: steal a spoonful of the Cainz sauce from your meal, or dunk them straight into whatever’s left of the sweet and spicy. Both work better than a plain marinara would anyway.
On drinks: the Sour Lemon Feijoa with Kiwi Popping Pearls is the one to order if you want citrus that isn’t apologising for itself — sharp, lime-forward, no sugar wall to wade through. The Lemon Rainbow Sherbet with Strawberry Popping Pearls is the fun order instead of the precise one: less about flavour, more about the pop on the way down. Both good options but for us the Feijoa is a stand out especially if you’re looking for something different.
Gimme Dat Chicken might be hidden in the heart of Keysborough but its worth a drive – especially if you’re looking for that Raising Canes dupe. Split the Cainz Meal (if you want to), get the Sauced Up Slaw bao, and a side order of boneless chicken with Korean Sweet ‘n’ Spicy. Don’t overthink it, just go hungry because there is plenty to go around!
