I’m sure in another life I was European. I love
everything about European culture, the languages, the fashion and most
importantly the food. So, on a recent trip through Hanmer Springs outside of
Christchurch, New Zealand, when strolling down the main street of Hanmer
Springs, we came across No.31 a cosy little European restaurant that just
screamed eat here!
Walking in through the heavy wooden door, you’re
welcomed by a warm fire and a friendly smile from the hostess. Shown to our
table by the window, No.31 is a soft candle lit restaurant that has that
perfect romantic feel.
by couples each adrift in their own romantic bubble, the only thing to snap
them out is when a table is being served and then all eyes are on the
beautifully plated food and just like us thinking I should have ordered that.
Looking over the menu, we opt to start with Grilled
Scallops a top Saffron Risotto with Lemon Foam and a Spice Rubbed Duck Breast
teamed with a Cranberry and Kale Salad. Followed by Fillet of Angus Beef served
with Pommes Anna, Spinach and Grilled Prawns with a Red Wine Jus. And what
visit to New Zealand wouldn’t be complete without indulging in a tasty bit of
lamb. A four-point New Zealand Lamb Rack to be exact with a Mushroom Herb Crust,
Red Onion Jam, Polenta Chips, Whipped Feta all with a side of Rosemary Jus and
Black Olive Crumble.
To put it simply the meal left us wanting for
nothing… except something sweet that is, but we won’t bore you with those
details and let you find that out for yourself.
If New Zealand wasn’t enough of a draw card
already, Hanmer Springs does not disappoint if only to stop in to sample the
menu at No.31.
