With the world opening its doors again, there is often a rush for people to crowd into the city’s bars, cafes and restaurants. And with so many people and limited tables you can often find yourself missing out. That’s why it is a great time to explore the culinary offerings beyond the city and delve into what the rest of Melbourne’s food scene has to offer.
Meat Flour Wine (MFW) is one such place. Hidden amongst the industrial backdrop of Braeside, this little eatery boasts a wide-ranging menu of pizza, pasta and classic Italian favourites. A family run restaurant MFW strives to always make you feel welcome, like you’ve been around to a friend’s for lunch or dinner whether you’re eating in or taking it home. Not an easy feat but the team do just do that, from homey style food, that is rich in flavour leaves you satisfied and wanting to go back again and again.
On this occasion we opted to take our food home because sometimes it’s been a long week and you just want to eat in your PJs. This was one of those times! With such a wide variety to choose we didn’t know where to begin, from the pastas, woodfired pizzas to the coal fired steaks the options were seemingly endless.
In the end we decided to go with the Slow Cooked Beef Short Rib with truffle mash, salted ricotta and roasted shallots, the Rigatoni with slow cooked Lamb Ragu topped with pangrattato, peas, pecorino cheese and dehydrated olives and the Pork & Fennel Sausage Pizza with S. Marzano tomato, fior di latte mozzarella, roasted pork and fennel sausage, roasted fennel and chili to share because you know, why not!
The short rib was tender and melted in your mouth, and don’t even get us started on the truffle mash… yum! While the rigatoni had developed rich flavour that infused inself into the rigatoni but still had some bite. Now let’s talk pizza, this pork & fennel sausage was perfectly made. The base was thin and soft with a good crunch, while the sausage ate well with the roasted fennel with a perfect hit of spice from the chili.
Not done there, a bottle of wine was on the cards and after recommendation from the helpful MFW team, a bottle of red Il Palazzo Chianti, a medium-bodied red with fruity and floral sweetness that paired well with each of the dishes. A good choice and a great drop.
All in, this was a great outing (or is that inning?) from Meat Flour Wine which proved it’s great to keep exploring and expand your food net because you never know what you’ve find hidden in those off beat little areas of town. Meat Flour Wine being one of them and we can’t wait to head in and experience even more of their great hospitality.
