The Melbourne food scene is changing, we’re no longer looking for just a good place to eat and have a few drinks. It’s our opinion that what diners are looking for is an experience as well as great food!

Let us introduce you to HWKR, a modern Melbourne eatery that is based around the experience of traditional hawker dining in a modern setting. Set amongst a dining hall, HWKR is home to four traditional eateries that change every six months and as well as Manymore the attached bar and cafe that stays constant throught ever evolving food that is the HWKR dining hall.

The Food Centre is currently home to The Modern Eatery, Lulu’s CKT, Indomie and Scoopy Milk Bar. Wanting to experience everything HWKR has to offer we decided to try a few things from each of the eateries.

So, this is how it goes, turn up to HWKR, find yourself a table and then head on up to order from which every place takes your fancy. You’d don’t need to hang around they’ll bring your food to you when ready.

And boy were we ready…

The Modern Eatery

With an emphasis on share plates The Modern Eatery aims to bring people together through the joys of food experiencing it together.

SALMON OSHI – Blowtorched pressed salmon sushi, sweet soy, Kitty K’s aburi sauce these were light and so moreish a great little starter

KATSU SANDO – Chicken katsu, fluffy white bread, katsu sauce, red cabbage, this we had to try and while we the bread went a little stiff – probably because we took so many photos – but was still amazing to eat with good crunch and great flavour.

With over 30 years of CKT experience behind the wok, Lulu and her family bring authentic, aromatic smokey charred goodness from Penang to the Melbourne streets!

LULU’S CHAR KOAY TEOW – Made with stir fried flat noodles, prawns, Chinese sausage, egg and all the other goodness that you would expect from a traditional Char Koay Teow. It safe to say anything from Lulu’s is going to be well worth it, so take your pick.
