Amongst the hustle that is Melbourne Chinatown you can often find yourself heading back to the same old places over and over again. But the joy of the Melbourne food scene is that it always has something hiding up its sleeve. Niubi is one of those places, nestled in Heffernan Lane, Niubi is home to a fresh take on traditional Pan-Asian cuisine.

With an abundance of choice, you could almost get lost in how much you could devour if you are hungry enough! But being peckish as we are, we opted to indulge in a banquet featuring a Golden Fragrant Live Lobster, Singapore Chilli Prawns, Stir Fry Vegetables, Bacon Dates, Spicy Shredded Chicken and Prawn Toast with Salted Egg Yolk. Team all that with the cutest limited edition Niubi Milk Tea and fresh Watermelon Juice, we were set for a food filled afternoon.

The centre piece for lunch of course being the Golden Fragrant and boy was it fragrant, from the moment the lobster was revealed in all its glory your senses are engulfed with a spicey aroma that left us dying to dig in.

Sitting alongside this delicious looking lobster, was an indulgent bowl of Singapore Chilli Prawns and a fresh inviting plate of Stir Fry Vegetables. Team all of that with Bacon Dates, a little sweet and salty, Spicy Shredded Chicken, which had a great little kick and a little Prawn Toast with Salted Egg Yolk just to nibble on in between the lobster and chilli prawns. Each dish offered a little something new to the table and allowed us to experience a variety of what Niubi has to offer. And while the lobster was a stand out the bacon wrapped dates were just delicious!

Hit with a little spice and a whole lot of flavour Niubi left us a little food drunk. And with so much more on the menu to explore like the Mud Crab you might get a little dirty but when it comes to food when isn’t that a good thing?

So, what does Niubi mean, well according to the team it means… F#%king Awesome and they aren’t wrong. When you find yourself wandering through Chinatown and trying to decide between dumplings and something new, head into Niubi you won’t regret it!
